home / Fun / Project Car / Sway Bar Bracket

I ran into several problems while installing the rear sway bar on my CRX project car. It's a Suspension Techniques adjustable 7/8" rear sway bar that comes with new brackets for the pivot bushings as well as brackets to mount the links to the end of the shock. I did a quick mock-up install of the lower control arms and the shocks to see if everything would work.

The first problem I noticed is the swaybar interferes with the exhaust pipe. This was not completely unexpected since I had problems with the previous swaybar (22mm Mugen) rubbing during left hand turns, but the new bracket located the bar higher than the previous one.

The link angle is fine for the middle position, but if I move the link to either the stiffer or looser setting, the link angle will be less than optimal.

The link-to-shock bracket is designed for the stock shock yoke, which has straight sided legs where the sides on the Advance Design shocks are tapered. This means the bracket won't fit at all.
The offset of the bracket mount puts the link at a bad angle that has it sloping inwards at the bottom. The best alignment of the link would be to have it as vertical as possible to prevent any side load on the end of the swaybar.

Since the flange on the bracket runs parallel to the shock axis (if it fit) and the shock leans inward about 7° at the top, it interferes with the link here.
